The Quill

Teams of four students must create written products given a prompt from each of four writing styles: Literary Analysis, Argumentation, Problem/Solution, and Creative Writing. The Quill is an original competition developed in cooperation with the North Carolina Reading Association (NCRA).

The Quill - Overview

The Quill is a writing competition in which teams of three students must create written products given a prompt from each of three or four text types.The Quill is an original competition developed in cooperation with the North Carolina Reading Association (NCRA). The middle school competition is completely aligned with the new Common Core Standards.

The Quill 2013 State Final

Northwood High School and Jay M Robinson Middle School take state titles.

NCASA held the third annual The Quill on demand writing competition on Saturday March 2 hosted by Lexington Senior High School. Finishing in first place among high schools with a final score of 91.0 was Northwood High School.  Team members for Northwood High School are James Calhoun, Frances Beroset, Jacob Friedman, and Quinn Kerscher. 

Finishing in second place was Northwest Guilford High School with 89.3 points. Finishing in third place with 86.4 points was Atkins A&T High School. Compete standings are shown below:

  3. Atkins A&T HS
  4. Lexington Senior HS
  5. Hickory HS
  6. Newton Conover HS
  7. High Point Central HS
  8. Myers Park HS
  9. Gates County HS
  10. Lee Early College HS

The following winners were also recognized in the individual events:

  • · James Stallings of Northwest Guilford HS in the Argumentation category.
  • · Aliyah Wright of Lexington Senior HS in the Creative Writing category.
  • · James Calhoun of Northwood HS in the Problem / Solution category.
  • · Tumi Mabaso of Atkins A&T HS in the Literary Analysis category.

This was the first NCASA State Title for Northwood HS.

Results from The Quill State Finals 2012

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities held the second annual The Quill on demand writing competition this past Saturday, hosted by Lexington Senior High School. Finishing in first place with a final score of 90.5 was Atkins A&T High School.  Team members for Atkins A&T High School were Meredith Hemphill, D'Bravius Blackwell, Keshaunna Goode, and Tumi Mabaso. 

Finishing close behind in second place was Lexington Senior High School with 89.7 points. Finishing in third place with 85.8 points was Newton Conover High School. Myers Park High School and WH Page High School rounded out the top five.
